Enough of saving the human race, now it’s time to save an unknown alien from extinction due to a virus. You must commandeer the last antibody and defeat the malevolent virus. Tentacle Wars by FDG Mobile Games GBR (Sketch Breakers, Blosics) is an eerie strategy game about well, tentacles. The aim is to extend your antibody’s tentacles to the enemy viruses and overpower it. Each such antibody has a certain amount of numbered potency which can be augmented by connecting with other antibodies. The extended tentacles can be snipped to provide attack boosts.
How well you play depends on how adept you are at managing the shared health in order to capture neutral cells and defeat the virus. Some of these viruses shall simply wait around for you to make the first move, but others will be much more aggressive. It is a simple enough concept to understand but hard to apply and win as the levels get progressively tougher. There are over 40 campaign levels and each level is thoroughly engaging.
The game has a somber look and feel, and the otherworldly soundtrack only serves to make the game spookier and lend it an air of desolation. This game will tickle your grey matter and test how fast you can think on your feet. The enemy isn’t particularly scary. Nevertheless, you will gasp in silent horror as your antibodies are overpowered and you see the numbers slowly dwindling down to 0. Or not, depending on how good you get at this.
The game Roots also functions on the same concept but loses out due to Tentacle Wars’ superior design. Although Roots is brighter and features colourful trees overrunning planets, the game isn’t as transparent as Tentacle Wars, which has potency numbers clearly displayed on each cell. Roots is a prettier game, but Tentacle Wars is a better gaming experience.
