Dungeon Boss is a turn-based RPG by Big Fish Studios which will be fun even for those who dare to not like turn-based RPGs. It is available both on the App Store and the Google Play Store. In the game, you control and lead a bunch of heroes into fierce battle against a wide range of adorably evil enemies. These range from trolls, ogres, dragons and bats to what can only be described as a very furious egg. There is a wide range of heroes to summon and train to their full, monster-butt-kicking potential. Your heroes and the enemies all belong to some element like nature or fire which have their respective elements that they are strong or weak against. This lends the game a dynamic similar to the one in the classic Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock. The monsters die dramatically, with highlighted squash and stretch animation and screams of agony.
The game is very easy to pick up and learn and replaying levels is worthwhile due to the randomized enemies and loot. The heroes are delightfully rendered in colourful, blocky animation and the sinister dungeons feature skulls lying around as decoration. Heroes range from seductive succubi with fancy names like Ella Ametryst to goody-two-shoes like the Archangel Emily and necromancer Pontifex Mortis to the alliteratively named Balog the Barbarian. The bosses are a major part of this game and trying to beat them is an enjoyable challenge. There are no ads at all which is a rarity in free games of this calibre. It speaks to the developers’ confidence in the addictiveness of their creation that they depend only on the in-app purchases to earn.
There is an active user base for this game with full-fledged forums and even a wikia to tell you about the powers and special abilities of the heroes in detail. Tournament events supplement the usual campaign. Play this game for a heroic adventure through hellish dungeons.
