Age of Empires IV is being developed by Relic Entertainment

Microsoft announced the successor to one of the most popular and best Real-Time-Strategy games on the planet – Age of Empires. Yes, Age of Empires IV has been confirmed to be in development by Relic Entertainment who are well known for being the makers of the Company of Heroes series, Warhammer 40,000 series and Homeworld Series. All of which are equally well known series.

Age of Empires IV Announcement Trailer

Feast your eyes on the trailer which was released just an hour back on YouTube. As of now, it’s just a bunch of floating artwork with a voice overlay and we don’t see any actual gameplay. There’s no other information about the game so far.

From the trailer we can see armies of different eras clashing together, notably, the British Redcoats, Native Americans, Japanese Samurai and Roman Soldiers stand out quite well. It would appear that we will be seeing campaigns around these civilizations. So we’re basically looking at a time period very near that of Age of Empires 2 and Age of Empires III.

Will DLCs kill Age of Empires IV?

One of the crappy things that Relic Entertainment has done previously is to make certain civilizations/races/faction purchasable via DLC. In Company of Heroes, the British Forces were a separate DLC. We hope that they don’t do any of that with Age of Empires IV. However, if they were to put together a bunch of civilizations centered around a couple of campaigns as they did with Age of Empires 2 – Conquerors Expansion, then we wouldn’t mind.

Age of Empires IV

It’s a pity that Ensemble Studios died out but Relic Entertainment seems to be a worthy successor to carry forward the mantle of the popular RTS title. It should be noted that Age of Empires IV is completely different from the Age of Empires Definitive Edition which is a remaster of the original title and was showcased at E3 2017. Remasters for AOE 2 and 3 are supposedly in progress as well.

Age of Empires IV launch date

It’s too early to say when Age of Empires IV might come out. As of now, after the release of Warhammer 40,000 – Dawn of War III, Relic Entertainment has not revealed any other titles that it’s working on. So we should see the game come out in about 2-3 years tops while Relic dishes out a few more DLCs for Dawn of War III on the side. So 2019-2020 is when we’ll see Age of Empires IV.

Deep in the suburban jungle roams the only member of the mystical species, Barbarianicus Ass-kick-us. This super awesome creature carries with it the answers to none of life's mysteries. Then what on earth could be so awesome about him? Being able to binge-game for countless hours and exercise remarkable restraint over his penchant for sarcasm around members of lesser species are just some of qualities that make him likeable...really likeable. xD
