Many of us here at the labs are huge MechWarrior fans and thought the series was all but dead. Boy were we happy when Piranha Games president Russ Bullock announced MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries at MechCon 2017 in Vancouver. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for an entire year for the game to release with the planned release expected to happen sometime in December next year.
We haven’t seen a proper single player MechWarrior game for over 15 years now. Wow. Yes, it has actually been that long. Bullock wants to go back to that single-player format, and give people the “action simulator they have been wanting for 15 years.”
Bullock also mentioned that MechWarrior 5 will be taking a step away from the usual linear campaign style that the main games followed until now and will be adopting a “sim-like” campaign where the player will be in charge of running of group of mercenaries. You will be able to explore how you choose to and fight for whom you choose to. So more power to the players, we’re already liking the direction this is going in.
But wait, there’s more! MechWarrior 5 will come with full Steam Workshop support, so you should be able to mod the game to your heart’s desire. The game will also support 4-play co-op; you will be able to recruit your friends for missions in the game.
Some gameplay was showcased during MechCon but with almost a year left till release, there are sure to be many changes and touches to be made. You can check their website out here.
