The creators of Doom sure do know how to make their fans happy. Doom, which will be out on May 13 for the PC, PS4, and the Xbox One, already has old school fans of the game excited with their latest reveal of the single player campaign which was streamed on twitch. And now they have something to be even more excited about.
Id software’s executive producer Marty Stratton and creative director Hugo Martin revealed that every level of Doom contains a classic map from the original Doom games. However, in order to unlock these maps one would have to work for it because they will in no way be easy to find. Every level will have a hidden lever that you would need to find and activate in order to access these classic maps. And fans of the game will most likely be more than happy to explore every inch of the level so it’s a win-win for everyone. The folks at Machine Games did something similar with Wolfenstein: The New Order where they added an Easter egg allowing you to play the old Wolf 3D with weapons from The New Order.
Stratton goes on to say that players who are familiar with classic Doom will notice that while you have new guns and demons, they’re all in the right places. And they’ve also included classic pickups as well as some of the classic music for the full retro experience.
The classic level E1M2 was revealed in the video to IGN. Stratton goes on to say that once you find a hidden classic map, the full version of the map becomes available for play from the main menu.
Looks like the new Doom has something for both newcomers and old fans alike. Id software sure is keeping their fans on their toes with Easter eggs, classical maps, and even the “ultra-nightmare” difficulty mode (which the developers claim is too hard even for them). With all this going on, Doom is looking to be quite promising.
