Reports of people stepping out on the streets and meeting each other and even engaging in social interaction beyond the Internet kind are pouring in from every part of the globe. Parents are surprised at the sudden change in behaviour of their largely sedentary sons and daughters.
“I was so surprised when my son said he wanted to go for a ‘walk’! The last time he took one of those was in 2014”, said Mrs. Sharma, the mother of Sharmaji ka beta. This mass exodus is easily explained by the release of Pokémon Go, one of the most highly awaited mobile games ever.
In case you are not aware of the concept, ( not a very likely situation, seeing how social media is flooded with Pokémon Go memes) the game creates an augmented reality for the player which is everything the millions of fans of Pokémon could have hoped for. There are Pokémon to be discovered everywhere you go, and Poke Stops and gyms are located in places of cultural significance and other important spots. The basic gameplay of the game is nothing new. Ingress which was produced by the same developers, Niantic, has been around since 2013. Combine an interesting new form of gameplay with the huge existing fan base of Pokémon, and the success seems only inevitable.
There are a few issues with the game, though. It drains your battery pretty fast and while it may be fun to walk in the beginning, only diehard fans will stay the course after some time. It does not not use an exorbitant amount of data but be prepared to increase your data plan if you get sucked into the game. There are numerous forums which sprang up just a day or two after the release and it is a good idea to join them to learn tips and tricks from fellow players.
The best thing about Pokemon Go is that for the first time, a game is truly social. You really can meet up with other players and make friends while looking for Pokemon. The game makes you look up once in a while and appreciate the beauty around you (even if that is just temples and metro stations). Just be careful to also stay alive while playing. And in the words of the immortal childhood hero, you “Gotta catch’em all!”
Pokemon Go hasn’t officially been released in Asia as of yet, however if you’re desperate to get your hands on it you can get the apk here without any repercussions. Keep in mind that the apk is for android only and if you want to play on iPhone you either have to make a new account and switch to region where it has officially released or just wait it out till it launches in India officially.
